Where did your pet come from?

Recently, Utah's most populous county banned the sale of commercially bred dogs and cats in pet stores. A growing number of cities around the country have already done so in an effort to reduce the number of pets born in barbarous conditions.

Some of the USA's largest pet companies already have moved away from such production in favor of offering animals from shelters.

Salt Lake County joined a list of nearly 90 municipalities that have passed measures aimed at so-called puppy and kitten mills. And that number is growing, advocates say.

A spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Utah said, “There are great pets already that need a home. We don't need to make more.”

But pet stores say the rule, which also includes rabbits, unfairly targets local shops with a good track record on animal welfare. Source: ABC News.

To me, this action makes sense. Adopt a pet from an animal welfare pound. Even if you have a particular breed in mind, you are bound to find the animal that appeals to you amongst the poor abandoned creatures waiting behind bars.

I don't have a furry companion, more's the pity. My husband I love animals, but we are not in a position to care for one. We adopted our last dog from a greyhound kennel.

I have never owned a dog or cat. My last pet, a parakeet, was bred locally (I didn't get through a pet shop). I love birds. Because I can't give a parakeet proper time and attention, I have chosen to be petless for the last few years, and I miss having a pet.

We got both our cats from friends who had kittens that they couldn't keep. I would always get our next pet that way too.

I'm not really a pet kinda guy, but if I was to get one, I'd probably go to a shelter/animal home and get one.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Growing up almost all of our pets came from a shelter. There was 1 kitten and 1 dog that did not. I'm not sure why we even got them from a pet store. But all of the other pets we had over the years came from shelters. I think it's so important to support the shelters and to help take care of the animals that are there.

My pet was a gift from a neighbor whose dogs just had puppies. I love puppies! Now he's grown but I still love him. Can't get over the great greeting he gives me every time I walk through the gate!

I never had any pets until now...my grandparents had a pet bitch and we were so attached to her, once she was gone we couldn't bring any other to take her place.

My last animal was a stray found living at a college campus overseas. My cat was a stray kitten that followed me home on a walk one day. I am a huge (100%) advocate for the Humane Society and other rescues sites. I will not buy animals at pet stores because even when they say, "their" store is different, there is no proof. Conditions are horrendous in those places.

Well, I have never had a pet so I'm no expert in this subject...But if the conditions of stores are horrible then it makes sense not allowing them to keep animals, why only dogs!

Our last pet was a rescue. And if we ever have one again, that one would be a rescue, too.

Hi Francene - thanks for creating awareness about such a critical topic. Our cat MiMi found us, meowing at our kitchen door when she was abandoned almost 3 years ago. She was only 4 months old then and now she flourishes. And so do we because of her. Suzanne

I have a rescue dog, and he is just the most gorgeous, kind-hearted, sweet animal in the world. He's a lurcher (a mix between a sighthound, like a greyhound, and a herding dog, like a collie). I don't trust anyone trying to make a buck out of breeding animals.
