Yesterday, Newberry, Florida held the 70th Annual Watermelon Festival. The day was packed with events, all with a common theme—watermelon, which included a seed spitting contest. Each year between 5,000 and 8,000 people turn up to wander around, munching on a slice of watermelon.

Florida is half a world away from my study here in England, but the giant sweet fruit is imported for us to enjoy.

Watermelon is packed with antioxidants and can help you look and feel younger. One particular antioxidant contained in watermelon is citrulline, which helps to rid the body of dangerous toxins, boost metabolism, and keep your immune system healthy. The outside rind of the watermelon contains Vitamins A, B, and C, while the seeds contain Vitamin E and zinc. The inside of the watermelon, which is what we normally consume, is extremely porous and filled with water, helping our bodies to stay hydrated. I found recipes for pickled watermelon rind on the net, but no way to eat the tough outer casing. Watch a video for stir-frying the rind.

You can roast the seeds to eat like peanuts.

Here are some more foods to help maintain your youth.

With the highest concentration of anti-oxidents, blueberries contain anthocyanins, which research has shown to help improve memory, even slowing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and carrots all contain beta-carotene, which gives them their orange coloring and provide a number of healthy aging benefits like healthy skin and eyes. It also helps reduce the risk of a number of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

The tomatoes contain large amounts of the antioxidant compound lycopene, which contributes to heart health and can help ward off diseases such as cancer, protects against sun damage and prevents wrinkles.

Containing the 'good fat', avocados are chock-full of anti-aging components. Their high levels of Vitamin E gives glowing skin and healthy hair. Avocados have alkalizing components, meaning that they help balance the pH levels of your body.

Leafy greens such as spinach and kale have been trending lately, and for good reason. These vegetables contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which help prevent eyesight deterioration as you age. Phytonutrients nutrients also help prevent your body from free radical damage.

While preventing cancer and heart disease, Broccoli can help fight physical signs of aging. Rich in Vitamin C, Broccoli helps prevent wrinkles by synthesizing collagen to create smooth, firm skin. The vegetable also protects against age-related skin dryness.

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, salmon and tuna are great foods to help you stay youthful and healthy as you age. Omega-3 fatty acids help keep skin firm by preventing the breakdown of collagen and reducing inflammation. This anti-inflammatory characteristic also helps prevent the formation of skin cancer.

Olive oil, a key ingredient in many recipes, has huge amount of anti-aging properties, and helps maintain youthful glowing skin and hair. I like to rub it directly onto my body.

Cucumbers are a great anti-aging food for those with joint and bone issues. Cucumbers contain high amounts of water and silica, which help to lubricate joints and increase the effectiveness of the connective tissues in your body. The hydrating characteristic is also great to promote youthful looking skin and prevent wrinkles. Source: Happy Dieter.

I should eat more of these, because I've noticed my skin drying out a lot lately.

It was a good thing I didn't know watermelon and cucumbers were healthy foods when I was growing up, because I loved them (along with oranges, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds). I discovered broccoli as a teen and it joined my list of favorite foods. Glad to know I am eating the right things. Too bad chocolate isn't on your list, though.

I try to eat healthily. I.e I always have 5 portions of fruit & vegetables daily. I love blueberries, they're quite expensive, though!
