A heartbreaking story to highlight the bad effects of marijuana.

The other day, a friend asked me for a blessing. The proud father earnestly desired for his boy child to grow into a strong man. You know what I told him? Each child will face their own lessons. Just love him. I didn't want to cast a shadow on his joy. With no room to share my story with him at the time, I thought I'd reveal a poignant story here.

In the latest news from Kingston (Jamaica) (AFP) - US President Barack Obama, who had been on the verdant Caribbean island of Jamaica less than 24 hours, was asked by a dreadlocked Rastafarian about legalizing marijuana.

The president replied, "I do not foresee, any time soon, Congress changing the law at a national basis."

This song will form a perfect background for what you will read. 'Nature Boy' by Nat King Cole (1948). There was a boy / A very strange enchanted boy / They say he wandered very far / Very far, over land and sea … Click to open a separate window, leave it playing, and then come back for the rest of the post.

I have learned by experience about the harmful effects of marijuana on youngsters. But first, let me share this interactive chart with you from Healthline. As I couldn't get the infragraphic to load properly, you can see the overview of the report here.

And now the promised story.

A young mother gave birth to a beautiful boy. From the moment he was born, the child gave love without reservation. As he grew, his parents lavished love on him in return. Very soon, two sisters joined the family and all grew strong and bright, taught with constant care and led by their mother's good example. Time passed quickly. Soon they began school, where the oldest brother excelled, being tested as a gifted child with an IQ of 150.

The family moved from the city to a small country town. Excitement filled the youth about starting High School. But the lanky 6'5” boy would have to travel on a school bus for nearly an hour to get there. When he came home, all his enthusiasm had left him but he refused to talk. Day after day, he faced the school bus until his mother noticed bruises on his arms.

Then, the heartbreaking story came out. He declined to fight back, instead choosing to 'turn the other cheek'. Everyone, right down to small boys, decided to bash him. The Christian bus driver and even the headmaster could do nothing to help him, saying he must stand up for himself.

Throughout his ordeal, the mother gave him unreserved love which he returned.

But, after a year of abuse at school, he cast aside his beliefs and fought back with his superior power.

With his guard down, he was open to bad behavior. He tried marijuana. Soon, he had changed from an upright youth into a laid-back loafer. He lost his drive and sank further into a life of degradation, eventually losing his life in a car accident at the age of 28 years.

As they grew, his sisters followed his example. One drank herself to death many years after his passing.

Don't let anyone tell you marijuana is harmless.

Just remember, every child faces their own future life-trial, no matter how much a parent loves them. To end with the words of the song:

The greatest thing / You'll ever learn / Is just to love / And to be loved in return.

It can really effect people differently, but I have seen some people really suffer because of it.

there is substance abuse but what about the social or emotional abuse that often precedes that? We are all responsible because we don't care enough

I agree with you on so many fronts - marijuana, that kids will need to find their own way in the world and that all we need to do is just love them. Thanks for posting the song. Nat King Cole is such an amazing singer. Good post.

In my indirect personal experience (not being a substance abuser myself but knowing some who do), those who regularly drink alcohol are far more prone to being abusive of themselves and others than those who use marijuana on a recreational basis.

sad :( important though... as much as there has been said about the bullying and it's impact on kids lives - there is not much changing :(

I had a cousin who survived drug use (even being discharged by the military) and became a successful businessman. On the other hand, my husband had a friend when in the military. His brother had been a drug dealer. He swore never to follow in his brother's footsteps. One day, we visited him and he was stoned. All he cared about was getting high and he was only interested in getting high with us. Our friendship ended as we didn't want to get high with him. We wonder, many times, what ever happened to him.
