What? Why do scientists go on creating robots to do things that are totally alien to normal people's lives? In my mind, the big brains should focus on getting things right here on Earth before they branch off to find ways for humans to colonize other planets.
The NASA-funded US company called Tethers Unlimited wants to create robots that weave large objects quickly in space like solar arrays, radio antennas or parts of spaceships. Tethers Unlimited would launch raw material such as carbon fiber into orbit. Once there, the spiderbots could use it to build larger structures. The ultimate vision is for the arachnid-like robots to build huge constructions in space. Multi-armed robots would weave pieces and then join them together with other parts, crawling around an increasingly large web.
I've just finished reading The Awakening by K.A. Madison that blew the lid off building complicated robots with superior intelligence. In that version of future Earth, bots have killed all those who resisted them and have taken over running things to keep the remaining people under tight control. What an unsettling thought.
We should ensure every society on Earth lives happy, free lives without discrimination before we even think of colonizing other planets. That's the best form of growth.
I'll bet you have something to add, dear reader.
